What Is Volume?
Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space a substance occupies. It is the primary measurement for liquids, gases, and bulk materials. In the International System of Units (SI), the base unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³). For everyday use, the liter (L) is more practical. One liter equals exactly one cubic decimeter (0.001 m³), as defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).

Limitations of Volume Converters
- Volume ≠ mass: Volume converters cannot tell you how much something weighs. One liter of water = 1 kg, but one liter of oil ≈ 0.87 kg. For mass-to-volume conversions, use a density-based calculator.
- Cooking cup sizes vary by country: A US cup = 236.6 mL. An Australian cup = 250 mL. A traditional UK cup = 284 mL. This affects recipe accuracy by up to 20%.
- Fluid ounces vs weight ounces: A fluid ounce measures volume; a weight ounce measures mass. They are not interchangeable. One fluid ounce of water weighs approximately 1.04 weight ounces.
